The Garden Design Process

When choosing someone to design your garden it’s important that you meet them to learn more about their past work, their working process and to build a rapport. Henley Landscapes, based in Stratford on Avon in Warwickshire always start their garden design process with a consultation meeting to interpret your requirements and turn them into a design that is imaginative, achievable and realistic for your budget.

During this meeting we will chat about your life style, what you want to use the garden for and listen to your ideas and requirements. We will view the garden landscape and offer some initial ideas and suggestions. To help you visualize your dream garden we can show you examples of work from our portfolio of garden designs and water gardens along with references from past clients.

Garden landscaping requires a diverse range of skills and knowledge, including many construction industry trades such as brick laying, carpentry, dry stone walling, land drainage, paving and plumbing.

Many landscaping companies need to sub-contract these aspects of the construction, which can delay the work and may possibly affect the quality and final finish of the garden.

Henley Landscapes don’t use sub-contractors. We have a full time team of experienced craftsmen, who between them can provide all the necessary skills to build even the most complex project.

Our in-house designers are fully qualified and experienced with all the inspiration and expertise to transform your garden, whatever the size or shape. We have an in-house planning consultant, so we can help you to deal with any planning applications relating to your garden work.

garden design site visitSecond Stage  – The Site Survey

A site survey, is where the garden designer walks around you garden, recording information that will be used to create your garden design plans. This can take several hours as the garden is measured and photograped, whilst changes of level are calculated with laser equipment.

We also record details of boundaries, surrounding views, aspect of the house and any features that may create a shadow, the direction of wind and condition of existing plants.

Any plans that you may have of your house or site are useful to us at this point.

Third Stage – Concept Garden Design

Concept garden design

Concept garden design

This is a scaled plan of your garden to show our interpretation of your wishes. Broad proposals for all elements of your garden design will be indicated.

Each design is created for the specific location and the needs of you and your family.

It will be unique, carefully hand drawn to scale and not just turned out by a computer. The concept plan will be supported by sketches and pictures to make it easier to explain our ideas.

We will share the concept with you at a meeting. Very rarely do we need to change the concept, for having listened carefully, we aim to interpret your needs clearly and produce a design that matches your dreams. Occasionally though, we may find that small details of the plan need to be changed and this is easily done at the meeting.

At this stage we may also show you samples of hard landscaping materials.

Fourth Stage – Master Plan

Garden design master

Garden design master

When you are happy with the garden design concept, the next stage is to create a master plan.

This is the production of the detailed final plans which are used to calculate the cost of building the garden and which are needed on site by the landscaping and horticultural teams to construct your dream garden.

The master plan will have proposed level changes, detailed paving patterns, names of specimen shrubs and greater details about planting.

If a project is to be built in stages you may decide to have a master plan drawn up for the first stage of build only.

Presentation of Plans and Quotation

Other companies may simply post the plan and an estimate to you. We find this very impersonal and prefer to talk you through the detailed quotation.

This meeting helps you to understand exactly what is involved in the building of your new garden. It is also another opportunity for us to answer your questions and clarify things if necessary.

If the quotation meets with your approval, this is the time for you to sign the contract.
